Here for the trading Tanev induced butthurt. |

That is why you write a blog and are not in charge of player movements |

None of these moves will improve the team. All these names would get is future cap space. Won’t get you much if they still think they’re in win-now mode. |

I really like Tanev but if he's moved out AND it improves the team....adios Brandon, thank you for your service and take care out there.

That's a pretty absolute thing to say here.

considering that the pens have - 1.2 mil in cap space heading into next year.....wouldn't clearing out 20+ mil of dead weight, and re-investing in better players, help improve the team. |

as the article clearly noted, the point of trading these players is to get the cap space so they can make other (better) moves. |

If they’re in win now mode someone forgot to tell the players. |

Stop with the common sense lol.
Problem is we all have contracts we want to dump so unless you are into trading dirty underwear with another team, the net benefit wont come in at adding $20 mill of cap space to improve the team. You just cant let the pipeline get bone dry, Im sure Hextall & Burke are done moving high picks & young assets for win now mode. Tough cross- roads to be at. Was a hell of a ride for the Pens & fans, but welcome to the hell of mediocrity most of us slugs live in |

Or perhaps knowing this is why Jarry sh!t the bed and cost them these playoffs....surely you couldnt mean the skaters, of which some had close to career seasons playing along side a skeleton crew?

Taking a look at the Islanders success after beating the Pens and it's only game one in Tampa, but IMO it becomes more clear that goaltending was the main problem. It makes me feel that the Pens need less of a dramatic shake-up than at least I personally felt they could use.
If they plan on moving Tanev and breaking up that fourth line, then I think it behooves them to just shuffle him up to the third line and see what happens. I'm a Tanev fan, but any way you shake it, $3.5M is too much to spend on a 4th liner, so if you're going to pay him third line money, then why not try him on the third line?
IMO moving Tanev up to the third makes it easier for Hextall to scratch his itch and find a competent gorilla for the fourth line.
EDIT: There's also the chance that ZAR gets taken in the expansion draft, so that third line may be done to begin with. |

The hell of a ride you speak of makes this stage totally digestible to me. This was my favorite, one that I thought had most potential, roster heading into playoffs since 2016. Id say 2017 when they won the cup but they didnt have Letang at all for those playoffs and I figured they'd be gone in one of the first two rounds. My only real concern this postseason headed in was Jarry, especially with DeSmith injured...oh and also how Geno would look missing time before getting back, and while he looked gassed fairly easy he had 5 points in 4 games. |

It's looking like Carolina is going to try and sign-and-trade with Hamilton. They've given him permission to speak to other teams. I'm sure his pricetag is going to be somewhere around Pietrangelo's cap hit.
Would you guys make some drastic shifts to bring him in so we have both Letang and Hamilton? My guess is you would move Marino to make that happen and sacrifice a little on the left side. Go with Dumo, POJ and Riikola down the left.
Obviously this will never happen, but I think it's worth exploring. |

We were talking about this in last blog...I said dump Math, Pett, Marino and lose Ceci...and you have around 14.5 mill in cap space...sign Dougie. Even with those 4 D being shipped out you still have Dumo, Tanger, Dougie, PO Joe, Friedman, Rikk and Rudy signed for D and I think a combo of those guys would be just fine and you'd still have about 4 or 5 mill cap space left from these moves after signing Dougie....but yeah none of this is happening. Our Flames friend Kevin raises a great point that all teams have players they want to dump...so dumping 3 or 4 seem highly unlikely. |

I think you might be able to get Fleury back. Petterson and Jarry and a 1st might do it. That way, Vegas can expose Jarry to Seattle. |

I haven't heard any talk of it, but given that the flat cap is going to last a few years I wonder if the NHL will allow a couple of compliance buyouts this off-season. Let teams walk away free and clear, and then teams can sign good players at bargains. |

But it's kind of funny, historically the best playoffs the Pens have had always seemed to have one of their big guys injured & the other picked the team up on their back & carried them there. This darn parity in the league really can get teams stuck in that rut of mediocrity. Enough potential to think you can make noise in the playoffs but never enough when a few things go wrong in the playoffs.
Off topic, you got to wonder if Owners are getting fed up having to buyout so many contracts because players dont come close to playing up to the value for whatever reason. Players getting fed up with a flat cap. I wonder if there is a bridge to a cap overage luxury tax conceded by Owners in exchange for a way lower buyout formula on these guaranteed contracts with minimal impact on the cap. Haha I think Im just sick & tired of parity which sounds so much like mediocrity :->

Well ideally I want to hang onto next years first for dear life. Especially when you are talking about trading it for a one year rental on a goalie. On the other hand, I'd love to get out of those two contracts. Not entirely sure how I feel about it.
Is Vegas really going to expose Fleury though? If I were them I'd be leaving Lehner exposed. |

If he is going to leave the Leafs I think it will be because he is getting $6M or more on a 6 or 7 year deal. Sounds like he loves being in Toronto so a team would really need to overbid to get him away from there.
I think his next contract will end up feeling like a Zucker contract where you don't totally hate it because he is a solid player but you will just never feel like you got great value out of it. |

After all, ditching "bad" contracts was one of Ron Hextall's specialties in Philadelphia.
Really? Based on what exactly? |
